A brief History of Saudi Arabia’s participation in the Summer Olympics:

  • Saudi Arabia debuted at the Summer Olympic Games in Munich 1972, where its team numbered 17.
  • Since then, Saudi Arabia has taken part in all the Summer Olympic Games except in Moscow 1980. These were Montreal 1976, Los Angeles 1984, Seoul 1988, Barcelona 1992, Atlanta 1996, Sydney 2000, Athens 2004
  • Saudi Arabia has missed only the 1980 Moscow Summer Olympics, it was the first country to announce it would boycott the 1980 Games in response to the Soviet Union’s invasion of Afghanistan; the declaration came two weeks before Jimmy
    Carter announced the U.S. boycott.
  • The smallest team that was sent had only nine members, which took part in Barcelona Games of 1992.
  • At the following games in Atlanta, there were 35 members in the Saudi Team, the largest ever.
  • Saudi has only one 2 medals, both at the 2000 Sydney Games. Hadi Souan Somayli won the country’s first medal, silver, in the men’s 400m hurdles. Khaled Al Eid later won bronze in equestrian’s individual jumping competition.

Next follows a chronological table of the events that the Saudi Olympic Team is participating in. After the table is a brief description of the events.

(Round B)

Weightlifting

Ali ALDHILAB will compete in Group C on Monday the 11th at 12.30. If he succeeds, he will advance to Group B on Tuesday the 12th at 10.00. And if he succeeds in that Group, he will advance to the Final at 19.00 on the same day.

Swimming

Bader ALMUHANA will compete in the Men’s 100m Butterfly on Thursday the 14th at 19.54. There are 9 heats, and he will be swimming in lane 1 of the second heat. If he succeeds, he will advance to one of the two semi-finals on Friday
the 15th at 11.19 and 11.24. If he succeeds in the semi-finals,
he will progress to the finals on Saturday the 16th at 10.10.
However, his chances are slim. Of the 66 swimmers taking part in this
event, he was ranked 63rd in terms of qualifying time.

Shooting

Skeet shooting is one of the three major types of competitive shotgun shooting at targets (the others are trap shooting and sporting clays). In Olympic Skeet, there is a random delay of between 0 to 3 seconds after the shooter has called for the
target. Also, the shooter must hold his gun so that the gun butt is
at mid-torso level until the target appears.

Saied AL-MUTAIRI will compete on Day 1 of the event at 9.00 on Friday the 15th August, and on Day 2 of the event at 9.00 on Saturday the 16th. His combined score from the two days will determine whether he advances to the Finals
on Saturday the 16th at 15.00. Again, his chances are slim.
There are 41 competitors, taking part in 6 squads of 6 and 1 squad of
5. He will be number 4 in Squad 2, wearing bib number 1425. In qualifying,
the highest score of the 41 competitors was 125, the lowest was 116,
Saied scored 117 along with 3 others, which brings him in at 37th
out of 41.

Athletics, Men’s 100m

Yahya HABEEB will take part in the Men’s 100m event on Friday the 15th August. In the first round, there are 10 heats, the heats start at 9.45 and continue every 7 minutes. Should he succeed in the first round, he will pass on to
the second round which has 5 heats. The second round is on the same
day as the first round, and the first heat of the second round is at
19.45 and again every seven minutes thereafter. After the second round,
he will progress to one of the two semi-finals on Saturday 16th
at 20.05 and 20.13 respectively. If he is successful there, he will
then go on to the final on the same day at 22.30. At this point,
I have no information about his qualifying time or his starting position.

Athletics, Men’s 1500m

Mohammed Shaween will take part in the Men’s 1500m event on Friday the 15th August. In the first round, there are 3heats, the heats start at 19.10 and continue every 9 minutes. Should he succeed in the first round, he will progress
to one of the two semi-finals on Sunday 17th at 21.55 and
22.05 respectively. If he is successful there, he will then go on to
the final on Tuesday the 19th at 22.50. At this point, I have no information
about his qualifying time or his starting position.

Athletics, Men’s 3000m Steeplechase

Ali ALAMRI will take part in the Men’s 3000m Steeplechase event on Saturday the 16th August. In the first round, there are 3heats, the heats start at 9.20 and continue every 14 minutes. Should he succeed in the first round, he will then
go on to the final on Monday the 18th at 21.10. At this point, I have

no information about his qualifying time or his starting position.

Equestrian, Jumping Individual and Jumping Team

This is quite a complicated event. All four Saudis will compete together in this individually and as a team. Ramzy AL DUHAMI, Faisal AL SHALAN, Adnan ALBAITONY and Kamal BAHAMDAN will have Jumping Training on Monday the 11th at 19.15. They
will also have two Horse Inspections, both at 19.15 on Thursday the
14th and Wednesday the 20th.

Friday 15th, 19.15: This will be the 1st Qualifying round for the Individual competition, but it will also decide the starting order of Round 1 of the Team competition.

Sunday 17th, 19.15: This will be the 2nd Qualifying round for the Individual competition, as well as Round 1 of the Team competition.

Monday 18th, 19.15: This will be the 3rd Qualifying round for the Individual competition, as well as Round 2 of the Team competition, which is also the final of the Team competition.

Thursday 21st, 19.15: This will be Round A of the Individual competition.

Thursday 21st, 22.10: This will be Round B and the Final for the Individual competition.
